Among women with known biopsy results, the model helps to distinguish between women with high and low risk for breast cancer. The study found that among women with proliferative disease, adding BBD to the BCSC model increased the percentage of women found to have a three percent or higher risk of developing breast cancer in the next five years from 9.3% to 27.8%.This hazard ratio for BBD was then entered into the BCSC model as an additional risk factor. To calculate the independent hazard ration for BBD, the researchers gathered data on breast cancer incidence for 1,135,977 women from the BCSC.This study asked whether incorporating the risk factor of benign breast disease (BBD) into the Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium (BCSC) risk assessment tool would increase the model’s power to predict which women are at risk of developing breast cancer.
